McHarrie and Mercer Parks Open to All

As of August 3, 2007 private parties will not be able to reserve any area of McHarrie and Mercer Parks. Small gatherings at either location are still permitted but on a first-come, first served basis. Folks that have already been issued a permit will be allowed to use the areas they reserved. This will not affect community wide events, such as Seneca River Days. In making the decision, the Village Board felt that it was important that all users have equal access to the parks and that there are many other reserved areas available such as Community Park and Paper Mill Island as well as in the towns and the county. Baldwinsville Welcomes Walkers

It just got easier for residents and visitors to the Village of Baldwinsville to cross the street. The Village Board and the Village Police Department recently introduced a new pedestrian safety program, "Bee Safe in B'ville" (The Bee is the mascot of the Baldwinsville School District). The program currently features bright orange flags in containers at two hard to cross spots in the village, one on East Genesee Street in front of the library and the other on Syracuse Street (Rt. 48) in front of the Red Mill Inn. The flags may be used by pedestrians who would like have a better way to alert drivers that they intend to cross the street. While these locations are marked with signage that indicates that vehicles, by law, must stop, many drivers are unaware of the law, choose not to stop or may not see the walker waiting to cross. Guidelines for using the flags are posted on both sides of the cross walks.

"Residents and visitors alike have told us that one of things they like best about the village is our 'walkability.' We just wanted to make it safer for them to get around whether they are going to our restaurants, shops, events at Paper Mill Island or just looking to enjoy our waterfront location," said Mayor Joe Saraceni. The flag crossing program has proven successful in other parts of the country in communities of all sizes such as Salt Lake City, Washington, DC and Hudson Falls, NY.

Local businesses interested in becoming a "Bee Safe" sponsor should contact the Baldwinsville Village Hall at 635-1410 or info@baldwinsville.org
